Pharmacology Ch.19 (General Anesthesia)

Difference between Analgesia and Anesthesia
Analgesia – Blocks pain, still conscious
Anesthesia – insensibility to pain and all other stimuli

Historical perspective of general anesthetics
• 1846 – inhalation anesthetics, revolutionized surgery
• Humphrey Davis – 1st person to make nitrous oxide (1800)
• Ether was prominent – “ether frolics”, William Morton (dentist/Harvard med student) suggested its use

Lipid Theory of anesthesia
Correlation between potency and lipid solubility

Possible mechanisms:
Volume expansion of the cell membrane (by the molecule)
Increase in membrane fluidity (disorder of bilayer packing)
