Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication

Nissen Fundoplication
a surgical procedure in which the fundus of the stomach is wrapped around the esophagus
– The procedure is designed to eliminate or reduce the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux which is resistant to medical management
– involves reinforcing a relaxed L.E.S, or valve, between the esophagus and the stomach
– this is accomplished by wrapping the funds of the stomach around the lowest part of the esophagus – much like the way a bun fits around a hot dog.

Gastroesophageal Reflux
Stomach acids reflux, or surge, upward from the stomach into the esophagus
– harsh burning sensation in the upper abdomen
– this feeling can radiate through the chest and into the throat and neck
– symptoms include: regurgitation, difficulty swallowing and chronic coughing or wheezing

occurring for a long duration
