Thiopental
Class: Ultra-short acting Barbiturates
MoA: Organ – Brain
Indications:
Lipid Solubility: High (Rapid Induction); Short Duration
Potency/Metabolism: / Slowly (t1/2 = 6 hrs)
Delivery: IV
CV Effects: CO Depressant; Respiratory Depressant; HR increase
Side Effects: Cardiovascular Depression; Respiratory Depressant – GABA receptor agonist
Contraindications: Do Not coadminister with weakly basic drugs – Weak water solubility, weak acid, easily precipitable
Comments: Unpredictable allergic reactions – contains sulfur, not a sulfonamide; CBF/O2 – Decrease

Methohexital
Class: Ultra-short acting Barbiturates
MoA: Organ – Brain
Indications:
Lipid Solubility: 2 X shorter duration – more rapid recovery
Potency/Metabolism: 3 X more than Thiopental /
Delivery: IV
CV Effects:
Side Effects: Few side effects than Thiopental

Midazolam
Class: Benzodiazepines
MoA: Organ – Brain
Indications: Pre-op medication;
Lipid Solubility: Better than Diazepam;
Potency/Metabolism: / shorter ½ life than Diazepam; Long recovery time
Delivery: IV
CV Effects: Less effect than Barbiturates
Side Effects: Anterograde Amnesia; Unconscious without analgesia
